a three-day training course for lecturers in Higher Education who teach in English

When teaching in English at a Dutch institution of Higher Education, you are faced with the task of teaching in a language which is foreign both to you and to your students. This situation calls for a high level of fluency in English, active knowledge of teaching-specific vocabulary and specific teaching skills. The CNA approach is based on an integration of all these skills, so that you improve your fluency and key language skills as well as your ability to teach well in English.

For whom
This course is intended for everyone in Higher Education who teaches in English.

Content
During the course, you will expand your active knowledge of terminology and phrases necessary for teaching. For example, expressions for structuring explanations, for managing the class and for referring to everyday items in education. You will also receive personal feedback on your English, and tips for continuing to improve your English.
You will also learn how to get your message across more effectively by making use of gestures in a systematic way. And you will learn techniques for stimulating interaction with your students. You will be offered tips on how to deal with the specific challenges of teaching in English, and to communicate smoothly, even if you can’t think of the right word sometimes.
Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to practice with different types of teaching situations.

The course is based on the principle that you should practice what you preach: this means the sessions are conducted in an open and interactive style, with a lot of variation in activities.

Duration
Five half-day sessions on request only
